Pirates

Pittsburgh's grandest afternoon lasted one swing. In Game 7 of the 1960 World Series, Bill Mazeroski hit a home run to win the game.

The club traces back to 1882, when it took the field as the Allegheny Base Ball Club and only became the Pirates in 1891. The nickname Bucs, short for buccaneer, has followed the club through most of its history; in the 1970s, when the lineup was built around raw power, players and writers took to calling it the Lumber Company instead.

That decade produced a second title, in 1979, led by Willie Stargell, who took World Series MVP as the Pirates beat the Baltimore Orioles. It was the franchise's fifth championship, with the first dating back to 1909. Divisional games against the Cincinnati Reds carry the sharpest edge of any on the schedule, with the Philadelphia Phillies supplying an older, more geographic rivalry.

No one is remembered in Pittsburgh quite like Roberto Clemente. He won it all in 1960 and again in 1971, taking World Series MVP the second time, across eighteen seasons that built his name as one of the finest right fielders the game had seen. On New Year's Eve 1972, he boarded a cargo plane carrying relief supplies for earthquake victims in Nicaragua. It went down off the coast of Puerto Rico, and he did not survive.
