It closed a wait of 108 years since the club's previous title, a gap fans had pinned on the Curse of the Billy Goat: in 1945, tavern owner William Sianis was turned away from Wrigley Field with his goat and is said to have cursed the team on his way out.
The franchise dates to 1870, when it played as the Chicago White Stockings, and joined the National League as a charter member in 1876. The name Cubs, used informally by fans from 1902, became official the following year.
Ernie Banks, known simply as "Mr. Cub," was a key figure for the team. The 2016 side that ended the drought had Jon Lester and Jake Arrieta starting games.
Each season the Cubs meet the Chicago White Sox in the Crosstown Classic, one of the club's two long-standing rivalries alongside the one with the St. Louis Cardinals.
Seventeen National League pennants stretch back to 1876. Only three of them turned into a World Series title — 1907, 1908, and 2016.
