Ramnicu Valcea Women

SCM Râmnicu Vâlcea's season turns on two fixtures against CSM București, the "derby-ul Ligii Florilor" that pits the country's two dominant handball projects against each other and usually decides where the Liga Națională title ends up in a given year.

The club's shirt has changed name more often than its address. It started out in 1973 as AS Chimistul, then took the name of the local chemical works, Oltchim, for the run that made it Romania's most decorated women's team. That company collapsed into bankruptcy in 2013 and took the club down with it mid-season. What followed played as HC Oltenia, then HCM Râmnicu Vâlcea, before the city took formal ownership in 2018 and renamed it SCM. A year later, SCM was recognised as Oltchim's legal successor and inherited its full trophy record.

That record is long: twenty Liga Națională titles, fourteen Romanian Cups, and a run through the 1980s and 2000s that brought the EHF Cup Winners' Cup three times and the EHF Champions Trophy once. The nearest the club came to European handball's biggest prize was 2009–10, when it reached the Champions League final and lost. Cristina Neagu was in that side, playing in Vâlcea from 2009 to 2013 before the club's finances gave way beneath her, in what is remembered locally as the end of an era rather than just a change of sponsor.

Home games are played at the Traian Sports Hall, holding 2,375 for handball, red and blue on the walls same as on the kit. None of it matters as much on derby week, when CSM București comes to town or Vâlcea travels to Bucharest and the league table gets rewritten in one afternoon.
