The club first reached La Liga in 1977/78, promoted from the Second Division, and has been relegated and promoted in roughly equal measure since — down in 1980, 1992, 1996, 2003, 2016 and 2019, back up in 1989, 1992, 1995, 1999, 2011, 2018 and 2021. The best league finish came earlier, eighth place in 2012/13 under Paco Jémez. In 1991 the Ruiz-Mateos family turned the club into a Sociedad Anónima Deportiva, the ownership structure it has carried since.

None of that prepared Vallecas for 2025/26. Rayo went through the season into the final of the UEFA Europa Conference League, its first European final of any kind, and lost 0-1 to Crystal Palace in Leipzig on 27 May 2026. It was the closest the club had come to a major trophy since finishing runner-up in the Copa Federación de España in 2021, beaten 0-1 by Betis Deportivo.

It began on 29 May 1924, when a group in Puente de Vallecas founded a club called Agrupación Deportiva El Rayo — the name it has carried, in one form or another, ever since.
