Freiburg have won three second-tier titles, and the club has treated promotion the way bigger names treat trophies — 1993 first, then 2003, then 2016. The two finals since have been lost: Bayern Munich took the DFB-Pokal in 2022, Aston Villa the Europa League this year.

The origins are a merger of two Freiburg sides in May 1904, one founded in the March, the other only weeks before the join. The name Sport-Club Freiburg came in 1912 with a third merger, and was restored in 1952.

Nico Schlotterbeck and Christian Günter came through it.

They left the Dreisamstadion in 2021 after 67 years there, moving to the Europa-Park Stadion and its 34,700 seats on the edge of the city.
