Segesta Sisak

The Gradski stadion in Sisak holds 8,442 people, and for decades that ground carried a different name altogether: under Yugoslavia it was known as Bratstvo-jedinstvo, Brotherhood and Unity, before Segesta reclaimed the city stadium as its own after independence.

The club traces back to June 1906, when a group of schoolboys led by thirteen-year-old Ivo Stipčić put together FŠK Segesta — a name that would change four times over the following decades before settling, in 1992, on HNK Segesta Sisak.

The nickname Stara dama, the Old Lady, follows from that same longevity, and the club marked it properly, staging matches against the Croatian national team for both its centenary in 2006 and its 110th anniversary in 2016.

On the pitch, the closest Segesta came to a continental run was in 1996, reaching the final of the UEFA Intertoto Cup before losing to Silkeborg on away goals after the tie finished level over two legs — a campaign remembered locally for Hari Vukas scoring a hat-trick against Örebro along the way. Domestically the club spent five seasons in the Prva HNL through the 1990s, and Josip Cavrić's goal in the 1978/79 promotion playoff is still cited as the moment that sent Segesta into the Yugoslav second tier.

City football in Sisak runs through the derby with NK Metalac. Since that top-flight spell, the club has drifted downward through relegations in 1997, 2002, 2010, 2016 and 2018 — five drops in just over twenty years for a side that has been playing football since 1906.
