Southampton U21

Long before anyone called it an academy, Southampton simply fed its first team from its own youth ranks, and the practice only took its current shape after the Premier League's Elite Player Performance Plan reorganised English youth football in 2012. The Under-21s are what that system produced: a side playing in Premier League 2 Division One and the Premier League Cup.

The list of graduates does the talking a trophy cabinet would do elsewhere. Alan Shearer and Matt Le Tissier came through the same pipeline in an earlier generation; more recently it has sent out Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott, Luke Shaw and James Ward-Prowse.

Adam Lallana, himself a product of the academy, took over as interim head coach in late 2025 after Tonda Eckert's promotion to the senior coaching staff, putting a former graduate in charge of the age group that once shaped him.

Games are mostly played at the Academy Stadium on the Staplewood Campus, a 3,000-capacity ground a long way removed in scale from St Mary's. The shirts keep the parent club's red and white stripes.

The Premier League Cup, won in 2014–15 against Blackburn Rovers Under-21s, is the one trophy on record. The FA Youth Cup has eluded the club at this level: Southampton lost the 2004–05 final to Ipswich Town on aggregate.
