Three Luxembourg Cup finals in a row went Standard's way in 1979, 1980 and 1981, and because the trophy was theirs to keep after that run, the women's team secured a unique place in the club's history. That victory in 1979 also opened the door to the EHF Cup Winners' Cup, a European run that had no equivalent on the men's side of the club.

The men's team, by contrast, has spent its history circling the title without landing it: runners-up in the national league four times between 1973 and 1977, and again in 1996, but never champions. In the cup they reached three straight finals alongside the women, in 1979, 1980 and 1981, and lost all three to HB Dudelange.

Standard grew out of the work of Jean Recht, a teacher who also served as general secretary of the Luxembourg Handball Federation, with Ernest Goedert taking the club's first presidency from 1967. From that men's team of the 1970s came Roland Karpen, who went on to become the Luxembourg national team's leading scorer with 202 goals in 80 caps. Decades later it is Diane Weimischkirch, who joined as a player in 1983 and had already worn the national team shirt from its first squad in 1973, who now leads the club as president.

Bascharage and Dudelange shared thirty and ten league titles respectively during the era when Standard's women were winning cups instead. Across the capital, HC Berchem remains the club's closest rival.

A national league championship, for either the men's or the women's team, is the one thing the century since 1967 has not yet produced.
