When Masashi Oguro signed for Tochigi SC in 2018, he had already played at a World Cup. It began in 1953 as a team of teachers, the Tochigi Teachers' Soccer Club, and only in 1994, once players from other professions were let in, did it become simply Tochigi Soccer Club.
Professional status came late too: J.League associate membership in 2007, full entry to J2 in 2009. What followed has been a stop-start career between the second and third tiers — promotion that year, relegation to J3 in 2015, straight back up after winning the Japan Football League in 2014, a runner-up finish in J2 in 2017, then another drop to J3 in 2024.
The yellow, blue and green on the shirt were picked for the prefecture rather than for the badge alone: yellow for the hopes of local people, blue for Tochigi's own ōruri bird, green for its countryside. Kanseki Stadium Tochigi holds it all now, with room for around 25,000 in Utsunomiya.
None of that carries the weight of the Tochigi Derby, played against Tochigi City FC, or of the wider North Kanto Derby that pulls in Mito HollyHock and Thespakusatsu Gunma.
