Toronto FC II has spent its short life chasing a settled place rather than a settled opponent, moving leagues and grounds so often that its real contest has been with its own instability. In its first three seasons it played in the United Soccer League, a third-tier competition when the club joined and a second-tier one by the time it left. In 2019 it helped found USL League One, a new third division built partly around clubs like it. Since 2022 it has played in MLS Next Pro, the league Major League Soccer created for its reserve sides.

The grounds moved just as often. Ontario Soccer Centre in Vaughan hosted the early years, then in 2018 the club shifted to BMO Field and Lamport Stadium after second-division status brought capacity requirements the Vaughan ground could not meet. Training-ground football at the BMO Training Ground followed through the USL League One years, before a settled home at York Lions Stadium since 2022. None of it has proved permanent: the club is due to move to Barrie in 2028, where a new stadium is planned and the team expects to take a new name and identity.

What has not moved is the branding. The crest is a shield built on the senior Toronto FC badge, marked out only by a Roman "II", worn since the club's founding. The kit follows the parent club too, red at home in the shade Toronto FC adopted for 2025/26, white on the road, made by Adidas. Whatever changes at Barrie, the club's purpose has stayed fixed since it was created to feed players through to that same first team.

It was founded on 20 November 2014, and its first matches came the following year, out at Vaughan, on Ontario Soccer Centre's field.
