Every meeting with Bergischer HC in Dormagen carries the weight of the NRW-Derby.

That climb has a specific starting point: 2011, when Bayer AG withdrew its sponsorship and the independent entity DHC Rheinland, which had carried the handball department, filed for insolvency. The team was folded back into TSV Bayer Dormagen in 2012 and restarted in the 3. Liga, winning the West division in both 2012/13 and 2013/14 before returning to the 2. Bundesliga.

Home matches are played at the TSV Bayer Sportcenter, a venue the club moved into in March 2002 on the same site as its previous ground. Julian Bauer has led the team since July 2024, with Peter Strosack wearing the captain's armband and Moritz Köster the club's leading scorer.
