United SC go into this season carrying the weight of a runners-up finish rather than a trophy: in the 2025 IFA Shield final they went down 0-2 to Mohun Bagan Super Giant, a result that keeps them chasing the silverware that once made them a fixture at the top of Bengal football.

That earlier success came under a different name. In 2013, playing as Prayag United SC, the club beat East Bengal 1-0 in the IFA Shield final on a goal from Ranty Martins; two years later Martins scored the winner again, 1-0 over the same opponents, to retain the trophy. The Nigerian striker remains the name attached to the club's best years, and Nabab Bhattacharya has run the club as chairman and managing director since 1994, through every change of identity.

And there have been several. The club started out in 1927 as Eveready Association Club, a name that had nothing to do with the battery company of the same name and predated its fame in India; when the company eventually declined to sponsor the club, it said United already gave it free publicity. Sponsorship did arrive later, first from Chirag Computers, which put the team through a spell as Chirag United, then from the Prayag Group, whose withdrawal over financial trouble in 2013 sent the club back to plain United SC.

Locally the club is known as the Peafowls, or Mor Jash, a nickname that runs alongside the purple-and-yellow colours worn as the Purple Brigade. Matches against Mohun Bagan and Mohammedan Sporting carry the weight of the wider Kolkata rivalry, played out in the Calcutta Football League and the I-League. United's own matches are held at Kalyani Stadium, a 20,000-capacity ground in the club's home town of Kalyani.
