The A-hall at Varbergs idrottshall holds 800 on Danska vägen. HK Varberg took shape there in 1973, once Varbergs BoIS gave up its own handball section.

The club has spent most of its life shuttling between the top two tiers. Promotion to the Handbollsligan finally came in 2019, settled by a playoff win over AIK after seven straight seasons in the Allsvenskan, only for relegation to follow after 2020/2021. A second spell in the top flight ended in 2023/2024 with a finish second from bottom. The strangest turn came a year later: second place in the Allsvenskan in 2024/2025, with 16 wins from 26 matches, but the Swedish Handball Federation withheld Varberg's elite licence over negative equity recorded in the 2023 accounts, and the club never got to the playoffs at all.

Albin Lagergren came up through the club, went on to Rhein-Neckar Löwen and SC Magdeburg, won European Championship gold with Sweden in 2022, and was named the country's Handballer of the Year in 2025. Games against HK Drott carry the weight of the Hallandsderby, and Varberg's 35–30 win over Drott in the 2022 Swedish Cup.
