«Community of Champions»
Omar Marmoush put on a Wadi Degla shirt for the first time in 2016, straight out of the club's academy, before the road took him to Wolfsburg and then Manchester City. Cairo's Wadi Degla Holding, a construction firm dating to 1994, had built the club around exactly that kind of pipeline when it set it up in 2002, running football alongside women's handball and rhythmic gymnastics under one banner it called the "Community of Champions." An academy tie-up with Arsenal followed in 2003.
Its only route to the top table came in 2009–10, when the Second Division title earned promotion to the Premier League — something only Al-Mokawloon Al-Arab had managed before them, back in 1981. Back-to-back fifth-placed finishes, a run in the CAF Confederation Cup, and, in 2015–16, a goal from Junior Mapuku that finally ended six winless seasons against Al Ahly. Chelsea sent Florent Malouda to Petro Sport Stadium on loan that same year, and the Frenchman repaid it with three goals and eight assists in eighteen games. A runners-up finish in the 2013 Egypt Cup, lost to Zamalek, remains as close as the men's side has come to a major trophy.
Eleven straight seasons in the top flight ended in relegation in 2020–21, a 16th-place finish that sent them back down. It took until 2024–25, and a second-place finish in Second Division A, to earn a return to the Premier League for the coming season.
Long before any of that, Essam El-Hadary had already worn the yellow and black twice, in 2013–14 and again from 2015 to 2017.
