The design came from Luis Rodríguez Tellado & Asoc., and the brief was straightforward: a football ground for one club, owned by that club, on its own land.
The first match was played on 28 March 2016, against Ривер Плейт of Argentina. Пеньяроль won 4:1, and Диего Форлан scored the first goal at the ground. The formal opening ceremony followed two days later, on 30 March. The sequence matters: the football came before the ribbon.
The pitch is natural grass, and it was lifted and relaid in full in 2021 — five years after the first match, which is a normal service life for a surface carrying a full domestic season plus continental fixtures. Grounds of this vintage tend to reach that point quietly; here the work was done in one go rather than in patches.
