Estadio José María Minella
Mar del Plata, Argentina
Mar del Plata built its stadium for a tournament it was never guaranteed to keep: work on the Estadio José María Minella began in 1975, on the grounds of the city's old racecourse. It opened on 21 May 1978, weeks before the tournament kicked off.
The site itself explains some of that timing. Parque Teodoro Bronzini , where Avenida Independencia meets Avenida Juan B. The design came from the firm Antonini, Schön, Zemborain & Asociados, with the building work split between Sebastián Maronese e Hijos and Crivelli Cuenya.
That municipal arrangement has outlasted the tournament that prompted it. The ground still belongs to the Municipalidad de General Pueyrredón, with day-to-day running handed to Minella Stadium S.A. The pitch remains natural grass, as it was in 1978.
