Estádio Municipal Barão da Serra Negra
Piracicaba, Brazil
Pelé walked off this pitch a loser on 27 August 1972, and by local reckoning it was the last time defeat followed him out of any ground he played on — Santos fell 1-0 to XV de Piracicaba that afternoon. Five years later, on 7 December 1977, the home side beat Flamengo 1-0 in the Brazilian championship. Two results with little in common but the scoreline, both still remembered here long after the visitors moved on.
The stadium carries a name older than the game it hosts: Francisco José da Conceição, the town's first and only Baron of Serra Negra, lent his title when the ground opened on 4 September 1965, and it has never been swapped for a sponsor's since. Fans shorten it to o Barão.
Its biggest crowd came on 30 November 1983, when 27,100 people saw XV beat Bandeirante 3-2 to take the Série A2 state title — the stadium fell silent before kick-off for club president Romeu Italo Ripoli, who had died shortly before. Work since has arrived in bursts rather than one campaign: a new pitch in 2006, safety and drainage repairs in 2007, a rebuilt facade in 2011, then heavier investment in 2012-13, when the ground was floated as a possible training base for the 2014 World Cup and gained plastic seating and a gym. Floodlights, eighty LED units, followed only in 2024. Much of the rest of the place still shows its age.
Music has passed through too: Mamonas Assassinas played here in March 1996, months before the plane crash that killed the band.
