Estadio Olímpico Universitario

Estadio Olímpico Universitario opened on 20 November 1952, and UNAM's own side, now Pumas, has occupied it ever since — through spells in the 1950s and 1960s when América, Necaxa and Atlante also used the pitch, and more recently when Cruz Azul groundshared here during the Clausura 2025.

The stadium earned its name, and its current shape, in 1968. Built originally as Estadio Universitario, it was expanded and renamed ahead of that year's Olympic Games, its capacity pushed toward 83,700 and its track relaid in Tartan. The same infield delivered the Games' most reproduced image once the football and athletics were forgotten: Tommie Smith and John Carlos raising gloved fists from the 200m podium.

Its lines were drawn by Augusto Pérez Palacios, working with Raúl Salinas Moro and Jorge Jiménez Bravo Moro, part of the same building programme that raised the rest of Ciudad Universitaria around it.

The ground later took four matches of the 1986 World Cup, including Italy's 1-1 draw with France, and hosted Interamerican Cup and CONCACAF Champions Cup finals across the 1980s, 1990s and into 2005. 26 May 1985 remains its heaviest date: a crush in Tunnel 29 during the Pumas–América final killed eight people, a disaster still invoked whenever crowd safety at Mexican grounds is discussed.
