The largest crowd the ground has held — 35,548 — came on 10 September 1977, for the Soccer Bowl '77 final between the Portland Timbers and Cruz Azul . It was also the last official match Pelé played.
The Multnomah Athletic Club raised the present structure, designed by A. E. Doyle and Morris H. Whitehouse & Associates and built by the Hansen-Hammond Company. Multnomah Stadium until 1965, then Civic Stadium once the City of Portland bought it, then PGE Park , Jeld-Wen Field and, from 2014, Providence Park .
The conversion to a football-only venue came in 2011, which is when the capacity dropped to 18,627. The Portland Thorns and Portland Timbers II share the artificial pitch — FieldTurf Revolution — with the Timbers.
Portland has drawn tournament football to the ground repeatedly: matches at the FIFA Women's World Cups of 1999 and 2003, the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2013, and MLS Cup 2021. Elvis Presley played here in 1957. The Foo Fighters came in 2024, the first major concert at the ground in some two decades.
