Stadium
Stade Mayol
Toulon, France
The stadium belongs to the city and stands beside the road leading to the Place Besagne, which earned it the local nickname "Le Temple de Besagne." Its identity is fixed to a single name: Stade Mayol. The singer Félix Mayol, a Toulon-born concert hall performer, paid for the construction from his own pocket and the rights to some of his songs. The mayor of Toulon and Mayol inaugurated the ground on March 28, 1920.
The structure has survived interruptions and changes. War damage in 1943 left 53 bomb holes in the stands. The city took ownership in 1965 and commissioned a major reconstruction, known as "Mayol 83," the following year to host football matches for Sporting Club Toulon, then in Ligue 1. That expansion brought the capacity to approximately 21,000, with a record attendance of 21,000 noted in 1988. Safety regulations requiring all-seater stadiums in 2013 reduced the capacity to 15,400, before a project completed in 2017 added a new quarter-turn stand and reprofiled the Bonnus stand, increasing the capacity to 18,200. Current seating capacity is generally cited as 17,500.
The playing surface remains natural grass. Despite discussions and tenders between 2021 and 2023 to install a synthetic or hybrid surface to address drainage issues caused by the concrete slab beneath the pitch, the City of Toulon officially decided against it in July 2023, citing water consumption concerns associated with hybrid systems. The stadium is the home ground of the Rugby Club Toulonnais (RCT), which plays in the Top 14. It has also hosted football matches, including those for Sporting Club Toulon and Coupe de France matches, such as the 2022/2023 round of 32 between FC Hyères and Olympique de Marseille.
Historical events have included major concerts and rugby internationals. On June 26, 1980, Bob Marley performed in front of approximately 22,000 spectators, one of his last concerts in France before his death in 1981. In rugby, a provincial selection defeated the New Zealand All Blacks 19–15 on April 17, 1990, in front of 15,000 spectators. The highest official attendance record is 18,500, set on an unspecified date in 1982 during a Coupe de France match between Sanary and Saint-Étienne.
Stade Mayol is the primary football and rugby stadium in Toulon, France.
It has hosted matches for Sporting Club Toulon, Coupe de France matches, and the Rugby Club Toulonnais (RCT) in the Top 14.
