Vasco Vilaça becomes Portugal's first male triathlon world champion

Vasco Vilaça became triathlon's world champion in Pontevedra on Sunday, becoming the first Portuguese man to win the title and doing so 19 years after Vanessa Fernandes took the women's crown in 2007.

Vilaça went into the Grand Final's superfinal top of the world ranking, needing only a fifth-place finish to secure the title. He crossed the line second, enough to deny Australian Matthew Hauser, the 2025 champion, who won Sunday's race itself. Ricardo Batista finished fourth on the day, which was enough for third overall and a bronze medal.

Fernando Gomes, president of the Portuguese Olympic Committee, travelled to Pontevedra and praised both men afterwards.

"Portugal, or rather, Vasco and Ricardo, produced two excellent performances, in keeping with what they have done throughout the various stages of the World Championship. But today was a truly sensational race from both of them," said Fernando Gomes.

"Being gold medal and bronze medal in these conditions demonstrates the quality of Portuguese triathlon and Portuguese sport," he added.

Gomes noted that Portugal left Pontevedra with four medals from the week: junior Dinis Ferreira took silver on Thursday and Filipe Marques bronze in the PTS5 para-triathlon class on Friday, before Vilaça's gold and Batista's bronze on Sunday.

President António José Seguro sent his congratulations through a message on the Presidency's official page, calling the win "a historic achievement for Portuguese sport and a moment of great pride and affirmation for Portugal."

Youth and Sport Minister Margarida B Lopes wrote on X that "Portugal returns to the highest place on the podium," describing the title as a matter of "enormous prestige" for Portuguese sport.

Daniel Monteiro, president of the Portuguese Sports Confederation, was also among the crowd of Portuguese supporters in Pontevedra.

"Sport lives on idols and champions like Vasco Vilaça. Congratulations, Vasco! The first Portuguese male World Triathlon Champion, 19 years after the title won by Vanessa Fernandes. A historic achievement that fills all of Portuguese sport with pride. A special word for Ricardo Batista, who finishes the World Championship with the bronze medal, and for João Nuno Batista and Miguel Tiago Silva, who today in Pontevedra gave everything for Portugal's colours," said Monteiro.

The Grand Final closed a nine-stage World Championship season. With the world title secured, Vilaça's next target is the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
