About the player
Christoph Klarer's 2024/25 season at Birmingham City ended with a League One title and promotion to the Championship. He was named the club's Player of the Year and was picked for both the PFA League One Team of the Year and the EFL League One Team of the Season.
Birmingham reached the EFL Trophy final in the same season but did not win it.
He arrived in July 2024 from Darmstadt. The fee was first reported as €4.15m–€4.2m, but Birmingham World and the Rheinische Post later put the net amount paid to Darmstadt at €3 million, about £2.5m. Fortuna Düsseldorf, Klarer's previous club before Darmstadt, took a 10% sell-on payment of €300,000. By late 2025 he had made 97 appearances for Birmingham and scored five goals.
He left the youth side of SV Böheimkirchen for the Rapid Wien academy in 2011 and moved to Southampton in July 2016, signing his first professional contract that year. He made no league appearances for Southampton, though. His first regular senior football came on loan at SKN St. Pölten in 2019/20, where he played 13 league games.
In October 2020 he joined Fortuna Düsseldorf permanently. Over three seasons there he played 74 league matches and scored five goals. In July 2023 he signed a four-year contract at Darmstadt, where he played 30 league games and scored twice, before the move to Birmingham a year later.
He had not made his senior international debut as of late 2025.
