Denis Makarov

Denis Makarov was named in Russia's final 26-man squad for Euro 2020, yet he has never made a senior appearance for the national team. His international record comes from the youth level. He played for Russia's Under-21 side and was named in the Team of the Tournament at the 2021 UEFA European Under-21 Championship, having scored one goal in six caps at that level.

Makarov's route to that point was a gradual one. He spent ten years, from 2003 to 2013, at the Konoplyov Football Academy. He then moved through Impuls Tolyatti, Yakutiya Yakutsk, Mordovia Saransk and Orenburg. His senior career began with Orenburg-2 in 2017.

The move that brought him attention came at Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk, where he scored 18 goals in 41 appearances. Rubin Kazan signed him on a free transfer in January 2020. He played 38 times for them and scored nine goals.

Dynamo Moscow paid €7.5 million for him on 6 August 2021 and gave him a five-year contract. He stayed with the club until 2026 and won Russian Premier League bronze medals in the 2021/22 and 2023/24 seasons.

His next move took him abroad. Makarov joined Kayserispor of Turkey on a free transfer in January 2026 and made 13 appearances. On 18 June 2026 he unilaterally terminated his contract, citing three consecutive months of unpaid salary. His legal representatives filed a complaint with FIFA over the debt.

He returned to Russia straight away. On 1 July 2026 he signed a one-year contract with Krylia Sovetov Samara.
