Green Buffaloes

Green Buffaloes play in the Zambian Super League, also known as the MTN/FAZ Super Division, and their last league title dates from 1981. Since then the trophies have come in knockout competition: the Mosi Cup in 2005 and the Barclays/ABSA Cup in 2015.

The championships were packed into a single stretch. Between 1973 and 1981 the club won six of them, and the first two were won as Zambia Army. That was the name the side carried when it was set up in 1965 with the Zambian Army as its sponsor. It became Green Buffaloes later. The nickname, Mboo, is the Bemba word for buffalo, and the motto reads "Go, fight and Conquer".

1975 was the fullest year of that run. The league title arrived together with the Shell/BP Challenge Cup and the Champion of Champions Cup. The Shell/BP Challenge Cup came back in 1977, 1979 and 1981, so the last of the six titles was won in a year when the club also took that cup. The Charity Shield was won in 1974, 1978 and 1980.

Home is Woodlands Stadium in the Lusaka district of Woodlands, which holds 10,000.

The player most closely tied to the club is Christopher Katongo, a striker who went on to captain Zambia's national team. He began his career at Green Buffaloes and finished it there.
