Guediawaye FC

Promotion, not a cup, is what Guédiawaye FC has built its recent history on. In 2021 the club won Ligue 2 and returned to the top flight, seven years after the one trophy that still stands out on the shelf, the Coupe de la Ligue Sénégalaise, lifted in 2014.

The club took its present name after starting out as FC Jubo, formed in 1993 by leaders of sports and cultural associations from the Pikine-Guédiawaye district, young people relocated to Dakar's suburbs who wanted to keep their organisations' identity alive on a football pitch. That suburban root still defines the club more than three decades on: home games are played at Stade Amadou-Barry, and the fixture supporters wait for every season is against AS Pikine, a meeting the French-language press calls "croustillant" and that Senegalese Ligue 1 followers rate among the sharpest derbies in the country.

Known as Les Crabes, in blue, yellow and white, Guédiawaye has leaned on academy football almost as much as the first team. Its juniors finished runners-up nationally in 2000/01, the same season the cadets took the regional title, a pipeline the club has kept drawing on since — Moustapha Fanné, an attacking winger born in 2006, moved on to Finnish side SJK straight out of that system.

No name carries more weight at the club than El-Hadji Diouf's. The former Liverpool and Senegal forward, one of the country's best-known footballers of his generation, took over as Guédiawaye's sporting director in January 2021, the same year the club won promotion back to Ligue 1.
