Across the Dakar suburb of Rufisque, the fixture that matters is against Teungueth FC. Locals call the meeting the Rufisque Derby, and it carries the weight of two clubs claiming the same streets rather than any old grudge.

That gap in status is recent history rather than a settled order. AJEL moved up through the divisions in stages that read almost like a plan carried out on schedule: into National 1 the year after their creation. The run through the 2022 Coupe du Sénégal fits the same pattern of a club punching above its place in the pyramid — a 2-1 win over Casa Sports in the quarter-finals before the run ended in the semis, the same year they reached the National 1 final.

None of it has yet produced a trophy. AJEL have never won the league or the cup, and the closest they have come is that runners-up finish. What they play for now is survival and standing in Ligue 1 rather than silverware, and Rufisque itself gives them a stage for it: the Stade Ngalandou Diouf, holding 7,500, in red and white that supporters simply describe by the colours rather than any adopted nickname.

The club began in Rufisque as the Association Jeunesse Education et Loisirs, a name that points to young people, education and leisure rather than a football project alone, founded on 1 January 2014.
