Kowloon City compete in the Hong Kong Football Association's First Division, and the club's name has been attached to the Premier League as well. Alongside the league they enter the FA Cup, the Senior Shield, the Sapling Cup and the League Cup.

The club exists because of a report. A Dutch football consultant reviewed the game in Hong Kong, and the Hong Kong Football Association and the district councils then worked together on what followed: a Third Division built around the city's districts. Kowloon City were one of the founding members of that Third Division (District) Football League, and the club dates from 2002. The district is in the formal name, Kowloon City District Sports Association. "Kowloon" itself translates literally as "Nine Dragons".

The team's home is Kowloon Tsai Sports Ground, at 13 Inverness Road, inside Kowloon Tsai Park. The ground is a public park facility, and its one grandstand seats 1,216.
