Lakeland United

Thomas W. Bryant Stadium was dedicated in 1941 and belongs first to Lakeland High School, whose football team uses it as its home field. Lakeland United are tenants of a ground built for Friday-night American football, with room for 5,000 by one count.

The club began in 2020 with a narrow purpose. It is a bridge programme for international student-athletes who want athletic scholarships at American colleges, and it has facilitated more than 680 of them. That shapes the squad: the 2026 roster is made up entirely of players from abroad, among them Brazil, Japan, Italy, Germany and France, with an average age of around 25. Head coach Lucas Ferreira and Tauan Salgado, the director of soccer, run a group that is built to pass through rather than stay.

Results came anyway. Lakeland entered the United Premier Soccer League (UPSL) in spring 2021 and won the Florida West Conference Tournament in 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025. In 2022 they reached the Elite Eight of the UPSL National Playoffs. Daniel Chica is the alumnus the club points to: he went on to George Mason University, then signed with Loudoun United and Lexington Sporting Club.

Late in 2025 the club announced it would join USL League Two for 2026, placing The Swans in the South Florida Division.

The nearest rival is Florida Tropics SC. The two met in May 2022. In January 2025 they signed a partnership, and Florida Tropics now serve as Lakeland United's youth academy feeder programme, so the history between them has an edge of a different kind.
