In 2017 Marin FC's youth sides took three NorCal Premier League titles in a single season: the under-19 boys, the under-16 girls and the under-17 girls. Marin could do it because of how it was built.

The club began in 2004 as an alliance of five local youth organisations in Marin County. Bakie Goodman was picked by Seattle Sounders in the draft, and Grant Stoneman went on to San Diego Loyal. Darcy McFarlane crossed the Atlantic to the Swedish club Östersunds DFF.

Jimmy Conrad, a former MLS All-Star, is the name attached to the project as coach and figurehead. The Legends joined USL League Two for the 2022 season, in the Southwest Division of the Western Conference. The name says what the team is: a pre-professional squad with alumni in it. Home games are at San Rafael High School Stadium, which holds 1,250, and the club also uses College of Marin and Kennelly Field. A women's side, the Sirens, plays in the USL W League.

The Legends have opponents who matter to them. The Bay Area fixture with San Francisco Glens is the one the club treats as its own derby.

Since 2022 the Legends have not won their division or the national title. The trophies so far belong to the youth teams.
