Niger's clearest silverware came in 2010, when the national team took the UEMOA Tournament, beating Benin 1-0 in the final after finishing runners-up in the same competition twice before, in 2007 and 2009. The closest they have come at the Africa Cup of Nations proper was reaching the group phase, in 2012 and 2013, and in the African Nations Championship they finished fourth in 2022.
The side plays in orange, white and green, the colours of the national flag, and its home ground, the Stade Général Seyni Kountché in Niamey, holds 35,000. CAF suspensions over the stadium's condition have repeatedly sent Niger's home fixtures abroad, to Morocco, Burkina Faso, Tanzania and Zambia.
Kassaly Daouda has made more appearances for the team than anyone else, 89, while Victorien Adebayor stands as the leading scorer with 22 goals. William N'Gounou has his own line in the record books, having scored Niger's first goal at an Africa Cup of Nations finals, in 2012. Ezzaki Badou is the current head coach, with Ousmane Diabaté captaining the side.
Regionally, the rivalry with Benin and Burkina Faso runs through the UEMOA and WAFU Cups, the tournaments where Niger's best results have tended to come. The federation behind the team, FENIFOOT, was founded in 1961, joining FIFA three years later and CAF the year after that.
