The team's first international outing came in 1958, away to Kenya in Mombasa.
Mogadishu Stadium, built to hold 65,000, is the side's official home, but for long stretches the Ocean Stars — Xiddigaha Badaha in Somali — have had to play their home fixtures on neutral ground elsewhere in the region rather than in the capital.
A World Cup or Africa Cup of Nations appearance has stayed out of reach, and the closer measure of the team's competitive level is the CECAFA Cup, where Somalia has entered 26 times and reached as high as fifth place on several occasions, most recently in 2019. The clearer success came outside the CAF calendar entirely: gold at the 2003 Indian Ocean Island Games in Comoros, followed by silver in Seychelles in 2007 and bronze in Madagascar in 2015 — a small run of podiums that remains the team's strongest sustained period.
Djibouti provides the sharpest rivalry, fed by the wider tensions of the Horn of Africa rather than by anything settled on the pitch, with Ethiopia and Kenya not far behind.
