Jong Utrecht saw off Jong Ajax 6-1 in the Eerste Divisie at the Nieuw Galgenwaard on Monday evening. It was the ninth round of the regular season and the result left both sides level on points at the bottom of the table. Utrecht moved up to fifteenth while Ajax dropped to sixteenth after eight games each. By then the visitors had already surrendered any hope of a comeback.
Wessel Kooy opened the scoring in the twelfth minute and Massien Ghaddari doubled the lead before half-time. Emmanuel Chigozie Owen added a third just after the hour mark, and Bjorn Menzo made it four from the penalty spot in the fifty-fifth. The Dutch side never got going after that and Ajax threw everything at it but found no answer. Owen struck again in the seventy-fourth before Diego Pugno and Ghaddari added two more late goals.
There were plenty of substitutions from both managers as the game unfolded. Utrecht brought on Oualid Agougil, Mylo van der Lans and Tijn Peters on the stroke of half-time, while Ajax responded with three changes of their own in the fifty-fifth. Driss Laaouina replaced Pharell Nash in the fifty-eighth and Bjorn Menzo was withdrawn in the sixty-fifth. The visitors saw Joeri Heerkens sent off in stoppage time after collecting a second yellow card.
The statistics tell their own story. Ajax dominated possession at 59 per cent and registered 103 attacks compared to Utrecht's 70, but they created nothing of substance. The hosts had eight shots on target and hit 47 per cent accuracy, while Ajax managed only six attempts on goal with 35 per cent accuracy. Both sides registered zero big chances created — and here's the thing — that is what separates a result from a performance.
Utrecht now sit on seven points in fifteenth place, level on points with Ajax who have dropped to sixteenth. The gap between them and safety remains narrow, but this result will have shifted something in the dressing room. Ajax's away form has always been fragile and this was a day when everything went wrong. To be fair, neither side has looked convincing all season, but one team showed up and the other did not.
