Tauragė Edge Past Jonava in LKL Thriller
Tauragė held on to beat Žalgiris Jonava 95:90 at home on Friday night in the Lithuanian Basketball League. The hosts took control in the final quarter after a tight first half, and by then the visitors had already spent too many points at the line. Jonava shot better from the floor but could not match Tauragė's free-throw efficiency, and here's the thing — that gap at the stripe decided the game.
Jonava came in with a record that told you they were out of the thick of things. Eight place after thirty-two matches, nine wins and twenty-three losses, and a run of defeats that included two heavy losses to Žalgiris Kaunas. To be fair, they had shown they could score, but consistency was the problem.
The turning point came when Tauragė went on a 12-4 run in the third quarter. Jonava had led by four at one stage, but the visitors handed the ball away too often — thirteen turnovers each side, yet Tauragė took them better. The home side kept their shooting rhythm while Jonava's free throws went sideways, and one mistake ends it when you are already chasing.
Looking at the numbers, Jonava hit 51.6 per cent of their field goals compared to 44 per cent for Tauragė, but the free throws told a different story. Jonava made 19 from 36 attempts, while Tauragė converted 22 of 24. The hosts also pulled more rebounds, 33 to 31, and that extra possession in the paint mattered when the game tightened.
Jonava's recent form gives you the picture. They lost 90-75 and 102-82 to Žalgiris Kaunas, then dropped 95-89 to Neptūnas and 95-90 to Žalgiris Jonava's local rival. What changed this time was the closing. Tauragė did not let the visitors settle into a rhythm, and the clean-sheet run on defence came to an end only because the hosts kept switching.
The result keeps Tauragė in the hunt for a top-four spot while Jonava remain in the lower half. The gap between them and the playoff places is still there, and the visitors will make life awkward for anyone who underestimates them. By then, though, they need to sort out those free throws.
