About the player
Sport Recife's goalkeeper Thiago Couto Wenceslau came up through the youth ranks at São Paulo FC and entered the professional set-up in 2019. Oeste took him in 2021, Novorizontino followed in 2022, and in 2023 he found the clearest run of games at Juventude, making close to forty appearances across the Série B, the Gaúcho championship and the Copa do Brasil.
In January 2024, Thiago Couto left São Paulo for good, with Sport Recife buying half of his economic rights for R$ 1.9 million while his parent club kept the other half. He settled in as Sport's goalkeeper, taking the number 26 shirt.
In June 2025 he moved again, this time on loan to Vitória, in a deal that also sent goalkeeper Gabriel Vasconcelos to Sport Recife in the opposite direction and included a buyout clause. The loan was due to run until December 2025, and Thiago Couto returned to Sport in early 2026 once it expired. Sport lodged a complaint with the CBF's dispute resolution chamber over the penalty clause going unpaid.
Earlier in his career, he represented Brazil at Under-17 and Under-20 level.
