About

The Campeonato Brasileiro Série B operates as the second tier of Brazilian football, positioned directly below the top-flight Série A and above the third-tier Série C. Organised by the Confederação Brasileira de Futebol (CBF), the competition serves as the primary national pathway for promotion to the top flight, distinguishing itself from regional state championships that run concurrently or prior to the national season.

The 2026 season features 20 teams, including América Mineiro, Athletic Club, Atlético Goianiense, Avaí, Botafogo SP, and Ceará. These clubs compete in a double round-robin format, completing a total of 38 matchdays. A significant structural reform introduced this year altered the promotion landscape. Previously, the top four teams secured automatic promotion to Série A, but the new format awards automatic promotion to only the top two sides. Teams finishing third, fourth, fifth, and sixth enter a playoff bracket, with third facing sixth and fourth playing fifth, to determine the remaining two promotion spots. The bottom four teams remain relegated to Série C.

Coritiba holds the record for the most titles in the competition's history, having won three championships. Other clubs with two titles include América Mineiro, Atlético Goianiense, Botafogo, Goiás, Palmeiras, Paysandu, and Red Bull Bragantino. Santos claimed the most recent title in 2024, followed by Coritiba in 2025. The league is currently sponsored by Superbet, operating under the official name Brasileirão Série B Superbet.

While the competition traces its roots to the Taça de Prata in 1971, the CBF considers the 1980 edition the start of the official second division lineage after the 1971 and 1972 editions lacked promotion to the first division. The name "Série B" was officially adopted in 1987. This national structure provides a clear hierarchy distinct from the historical prestige held by state titles like the Campeonato Paulista or Carioca.
