Al Hilal Port Sudan

For most of its existence it has lived in the shadow of the two Omdurman giants, Al-Hilal and Al-Merrikh.

Against that backdrop, 1992 stands apart. Al Hilal Port Sudan won the Sudan Premier League that year, finishing above Al-Merrikh, and no club outside the Omdurman pair has taken the title since. Two runner-up finishes in the Sudan Cup, in 1991 against Al-Merrikh and in 1995 against Al-Mourada, came either side of that championship, framing a short spell in which the club pushed level with the country's biggest names before receding from contention.

The club has since moved between the top flight and relegation, returning to the Sudan Premier League for the 2020/21 season, and has taken occasional continental trips, including a run in the CAF Confederation Cup in 2022/23. Home games are played at the 20,000-capacity Port Sudan International Stadium, in a blue kit that has become shorthand for the club along the Red Sea coast.

Mohammed Kamal came up through the club as a goalkeeper before his move to Al-Merrikh, and it was in Sudan colours that he made his name: part of the national squad that finished third at the 2011 African Nations Championship, he remains the player Port Sudan supporters point to first.
