The stredoslovenské derby against HKM Zvolen still frames every strong season in Banská Bystrica. The current club only came into being in June 2005, taking the name HC 05 after the bankruptcy of its predecessor, Iskra Banská Bystrica, though organised hockey in the city traces back to a team called Slávia in 1922.
Promotion came in 2008, after the club had already topped the second tier twice. Under Vladimír Országh, the Rams took the title in 2017 and defended it in 2018; Dan Ceman took over for the third straight championship in 2019, a run built around Martin Belluš.
Zimný štadión Banská Bystrica, known to sponsors as the Tipsport Aréna, holds around 3,000.
