Two league titles arrived back to back, in 2021 and 2022, taking the club's tally of Liga Nacional de Hockey Hielo championships to seven. The section had first tasted a national trophy far earlier, lifting the Copa del Rey in 1976, four years after its opening match — a 7–5 win over a US Navy side on 15 September 1972.

The section grew out of the opening of the Palau de Gel in October 1971, the rink built for the wider multi-sport club. By the mid-1980s the senior side had been disbanded, and only junior teams kept ice hockey under the FC Barcelona name until the department returned to top-flight competition in 1990.

Success has come with plenty of near misses attached: the club has been beaten in the Copa del Rey final sixteen times, and in continental competition it has never gone further than the second round of the IIHF Continental Cup, a stage it reached in 2009–10.

The fixture against Club Gel Puigcerdà, still called the Catalan derby, carries more weight than any other date on the calendar.

The original Palau de Gel, which held 1,256 people, closed for redevelopment in 2022. The team has been playing in a temporary facility since 2026, waiting on a permanent replacement due in 2029.
