BG Göttingen

Göttingen is a university town in Lower Saxony.

The high point came on home ground. In May 2010, Göttingen hosted the FIBA EuroChallenge Final Four and beat the Russian club Krasnye Krylya Samara 83–75 in the final, with Taylor Rochestie taking the MVP award after scoring 14 points in that game. It made Göttingen the third German club to win a European title, following Alba Berlin and Mitteldeutscher BC. Domestically the club has never lifted the German Cup, reaching only a semi-final in that same 2009–10 season, but it has twice won the ProA championship, in 2007 and again in 2014, both times going straight up into the Basketball Bundesliga.

Between those two promotions came a relegation, in 2011–12, the season after the European triumph. The rivalry with Basketball Löwen Braunschweig, played out as the Niedersachsen-Derby, has framed much of the club's league business ever since. It was Braunschweig, fittingly, who confirmed Göttingen's most recent fall: a 101–77 defeat in April 2025 that ended an 11-season run in the top flight, after a 2024–25 campaign that produced just three wins and an 18-game losing streak.
