Davos

Thirty-one Swiss championships sit against HC Davos' name, and eighteen of them came inside a single stretch, from 1933 to 1950, when the forward line known as the ni-sturm — Bibi Torriani, Hans Cattini and Ferdinand Cattini — carried the club through the war years and beyond.

Dr Paul Müller put the club together in 1921, and within two years Davos had begun hosting the Spengler Cup, a tournament it went on to win seventeen times. Success at home was never automatic, though: relegation to the third tier in 1990 sent the club out of the top flight, and it took until 1993 to work back up. What followed was a second golden period, this one shaped by Arno del Curto, whose coaching produced six championships between 2002 and 2018, most recently in 2015.

The Swiss Cup has stayed out of reach — finals lost in 2019 and 2020 left that one gap in the trophy room. Continental hockey brought Davos closest to a breakthrough in 2015/16, when a run to the semi-finals of the Champions Hockey League marked the club's best showing there. Among the players who passed through, Joe Thornton and Jonas Hiller wore the jersey before their names became known elsewhere, though the numbers actually retired at the VAT Arena belong to Davos men: Marc Gianola's five, Sandro Rizzi's 69, and the shirts worn by Jan and Reto von Arx, 78 and 83.

In 2026, that reach for a 32nd title ended instead with Fribourg-Gottéron lifting the trophy.
