Before it was a hockey team, HIFK was a gymnastics and sports club in Helsinki, and ice hockey did not enter its programme until 1928, with the section only put on a formal footing in 1945. The parent body dates to 1897.
The club joined the SM-liiga as a founding member in 1975 and has never dropped out of the top division since. Its championship record splits neatly across two eras: three titles in the old SM-sarja, taken in 1969, 1970 and 1974, and four more once the league was rebranded, in 1980, 1983, 1998 and 2011. A run to the IIHF European Cup followed the first of those SM-liiga titles, in 1980–81, one of the few times a Finnish club has held that trophy.
