Herb Simon, who already owned the Indiana Pacers, brought Indianapolis into the WNBA's second wave of expansion, and the league awarded the franchise on June 7, 1999, alongside Miami, Portland and Seattle. The Fever took the court for the first time on June 1, 2000, and beat the Miami Sol 57-54.
It was the first professional basketball championship Indiana had seen since the ABA title of 1973. The Fever had already lost one Finals, to the Phoenix Mercury in 2009, and lost another to the same Lynx in 2015.
Ownership never moved the team out of Indianapolis, and it has played every one of those seasons at what is now Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
Caitlin Clark's arrival in 2024 gave the rivalry with the Chicago Sky a new edge, her matchups against Angel Reese; Clark's rookie year also brought a WNBA record of 19 assists in a single game. Kelsey Mitchell, in Indiana since 2019, has since set her own league mark, sinking nine three-pointers in one outing. Aliyah Boston took Rookie of the Year honours the season before Clark did.
Stephanie White took over as head coach in 2024, and the team she built won the Commissioner's Cup in its first edition in 2025, beating Minnesota 74-59 with Natasha Howard as MVP.
