Brooklyn has had a WNBA tenant since 2021, when the Liberty moved into the Barclays Center after stints at Madison Square Garden, the Prudential Center in Newark and, briefly, the Westchester County Center. The Barclays Center seats 17,732 for basketball.

New York was one of the eight charter franchises when the WNBA launched in 1997, and it reached the Finals that first year, then again in 1999, 2000 and 2002 — losing each time, twice to the Houston Comets and once to the Los Angeles Sparks. The pattern held for over two decades: six Finals appearances, six defeats, including a loss to the Las Vegas Aces in 2023. Jonquel Jones ended that run as Finals MVP in 2024, when the Liberty beat the Minnesota Lynx in five games for the club's first championship.

Joe Tsai and Clara Wu Tsai bought the team in 2019 from the Madison Square Garden Company.
