College Park Center sits on the University of Texas at Arlington campus. The franchise itself did not begin in Texas at all. It started in 1998 in Auburn Hills, Michigan, as the Detroit Shock, moved to Tulsa in 2010 as the Tulsa Shock, and only reached the Dallas-Fort Worth area in November 2015, taking the court as the Dallas Wings the following season.

The championship history belongs to the Detroit years. Under Bill Laimbeer, the Shock won the title three times — 2003, 2006 and 2008 — beating a different opponent each time, with Ruth Riley, Deanna Nolan and Katie Smith each taking Finals MVP honours in turn.

Liz Cambage set the WNBA single-game scoring record with 53 points in 2018, still the mark to beat. Arike Ogunbowale has become the franchise's all-time leading scorer, the Dallas era's defining name in a way no Detroit or Tulsa player carried over.

Three championships remain the total, all won before the team ever set foot in Texas.
