The Women's National Basketball Association launched in 1997 with eight franchises, and Los Angeles got one of them: the Sparks. Lisa Leslie became the franchise's first superstar and the first woman to dunk in a WNBA game, and she stayed with the club through 2009, with a brief return in 2008.

Under coach Michael Cooper, the Sparks won back-to-back titles in 2001 and 2002, beating the Charlotte Sting and then the New York Liberty.

Nneka Ogwumike followed a similar arc from 2012, and by the time she left the club in 2025 she had become its all-time leading scorer.

The Sparks now play at Crypto.com Arena, formerly Staples Center, in front of crowds of up to 19,079.
