The club traces back to 1967, when Aimo Mäkinen took over the ice hockey section of the amateur outfit Töölön Vesa. By the 1970s it had already beaten Tappara to the SM-liiga title, and it went on to add five more Finnish championships.
In 2014 Jokerit became the first Finnish club to join the KHL, a step made possible after Harkimo sold a 49% stake to Gennadi Timchenko and the Rotenberg brothers the previous year. The team won the Bobrov Division in 2016, the first non-Russian side to do so, but the arrangement ended in 2022, when the club withdrew from the league after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. A new group led by Mikko Saarni took charge in 2023, and Jokerit spent three seasons rebuilding in the Mestis second tier, winning it twice, in 2025 and 2026, before returning to Liiga.
