JYP

Every JYP season carries a weekend against KalPa Kuopio, the Järvi-Suomen derby. That rivalry has outlasted the club's own name. What plays hockey in Jyväskylä now split away in 1977 from a wider sports society called Jyväskylän Palloilijat, a split forced by money troubles; the football side kept going as JJK, the hockey side became its own outfit and eventually, in 1999, a limited company under the JYP banner.

The silverware took decades to arrive. JYP lost Liiga finals in 1989 and 1992 before finally winning the championship in 2009, then again in 2012. The bigger surprise came in 2018, when a club beat Växjö Lakers 2–0 to lift the Champions Hockey League. A European Trophy from 2013 sits alongside it, less discussed but part of the same run of European ambition that a partnership with the Boston Bruins has since kept alive.

Supporters still call the team Hurrikaani, and the LähiTapiola Areena, with its 4,628 seats, rarely feels bigger than the town it serves.
