«The Red Devils»
The club has not always carried that name. In 1902 it went bankrupt and was reorganised as Manchester United, taking the red shirts, white shorts and black socks that settled into the kit by 1928. Old Trafford, its home ground, holds 74,158. The nickname "Red Devils" arrived later still, borrowed from Salford's rugby club on the initiative of manager Sir Matt Busby in the early 1960s.
Busby's own side had already produced the "Holy Trinity" of George Best, Bobby Charlton and Denis Law. That run of success has made United the most decorated club in English football: 20 league titles, 3 European Cups among them — 1968 against Benfica, that 1999 final against Bayern, and a penalty shoot-out win over Chelsea in Moscow in 2008. The Manchester derby against City, the meetings with Liverpool and the old Roses fixture with Leeds United carry the club's sharpest rivalries.
No one shaped that record more than Sir Alex Ferguson. He took charge in 1986 and stayed until 2013, 27 years in which United won 38 trophies, 13 of them league titles, 2 of them European Cups — including the one completed at the Nou Camp.
