MMKS Podhale

Nowy Targ sits under the Tatras, and for decades the town's identity on ice has run through one club. MMKS Podhale grew out of a multi-sport society founded in 1932, though the ice hockey section itself only came together during the Second World War, and the senior team has since carried the town's colours — yellow, blue and red — through some of the harder turns in Polish hockey.

What stayed with supporters longer was Jacek Zamojski, who wore the shirt across three separate spells between 1986 and 2007 and picked up the Golden Stick in 1995. Matches against Cracovia, played as the Derby Małopolski, carry the same weight regardless of where either side sits in the table.

The club's more recent history is one of survival rather than silverware. When Wojas Podhale collapsed financially in 2010, MMKS Podhale Nowy Targ took over the senior team's place and won a promotion playoff to get straight back into the top flight. It did not last: relegation in 2012 ended 57 consecutive years in Poland's top division, a fall the town felt directly, and it took a wild-card return in 2013/14 to put the senior side back among the elite. Ownership shifted again in 2015, when Klub Hokejowy Podhale Nowy Targ took over as TatrySki Podhale.

That structure has now come apart. In May 2025, KH Podhale Nowy Targ announced it would not enter the 2025/26 Polish Hockey League season, leaving the MMKS project to carry senior hockey in the town forward on its own, working out of the Miejska Hala Lodowa.
