In the 2009 Bundesliga final, Rickey Paulding walked away as Finals MVP, and Oldenburg had its first German Championship. It was the high point of a run that began decades earlier as the basketball department of Oldenburger TB, and it did not become independent until 2001, when it was refounded as EWE Baskets Oldenburg. What Paulding gave the club went beyond that one trophy: he stayed for fifteen seasons, from 2007 to 2022.

Beyond the domestic game, the club has tested itself in Europe, reaching the quarter-finals of the FIBA EuroChallenge in 2012–13 and, on the back of that 2009 title, taking part in the EuroLeague itself the following season.

The team plays in front of just over 6,000 at the Große EWE Arena, wearing yellow and blue, and answers to Donnervögel, the Thunderbirds.
